Bar BQ

Bar BQ, A Brooklyn Barbeque Joint opens on a quiet
Greenwood Heights corner.  It is real down home, fall
off the bone, and stick to your ribs barbeque served
in a beautiful neighborhood bar.

April 15, 2005

In 2003, Bar BQ owner, smoker, cook and bottle washer
Frank Turnitza threw a backyard barbeque hosted by his
schipperkee dog Ace.  ‘Ace’s Big Barbeque Bash’
featured Frank’s summer favorites: pulled pork, beef
brisket, barbeque chicken and sizzling fat sausages
served with cole slaw and potato salad.  “My wife
says that now I just have to throw that party every
night.  I taught myself how to barbeque a few years
ago and I’ve always loved to have 40 or 50 people over
for a big party a few times a year.  As it happens, I
was looking for a new career and things just kind of
clicked.”  A few months later, Frank began to sell his
barbeque on the New York City Street Fair circuit.
“It was my rolling juke joint packed into a minivan,
my feet resting on cases of bottled water.  A smoker,
some coolers, a canopy, a generator and blues music.”
A year and a half later, he opened Bar BQ.

Opening the door to Bar BQ, one is greeted by the
perfume of hickory smoke on the air.  The hip young
staff hands over huge platters of pulled pork, smoked
brisket, baby back ribs, barbeque chicken, sausages
and mountainous piles of their jumbo smoked chicken
wings.  The meats are accompanied by cheddary macaroni
and cheese, hand cut cole slaw, a deliciously
refreshing potato and white bean salad with cilantro,
sweet and tangy barbeque beans, and made on the
premises barbeque sauces.  Deserts include warm pecan
pie and Babycakes chocolate layer cake.

Blues music plays in what would otherwise pass for a
great Brooklyn neighborhood bar.  Their gorgeous
vintage oval bar, early 60s swivel stools and
whimsical livestock figurines make for a room that’s
stylish, cool, retro, comfortable, homey and
juke-jointy all at once.  It really is a Brooklyn
barbeque joint.  There are no tablecloths, utensils
are plastic, and meals are served on cafeteria trays
with red checkered paper boats holding the thick with
meat sandwiches, oversize platters, and combos
accompanied by traditional barbeque shack white bread
slices.

The combos are great a value with the 4 meat platter
and 2 sides for only $19.50.  It could certainly feed
two, but they’ll wrap up the leftovers so you can
enjoy them for lunch the next day.
